In my nutrition consultancy practice, I have come across numerous exercise programs that are touted to improve metabolic processes and the main reason for doing this is to be able to advise my clients what will fit them better. One such program is Qigong.

What is Qigong about?

Qigong is form of traditional Chinese medicine, it is a combination of physical movements, deep breathing, and meditation. It has been known to improve various aspects of health, including metabolic function.

How Qigong differs from Yoga.

From a nutritional perspective, both qigong and yoga are beneficial for overall health and well-being. Qigong helps to improve digestion and boost the immune system, while yoga helps to improve flexibility, balance, and strength. Both practices also help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, which can have a positive impact on overall health.

Scientific approach to Qigong.

Several studies have shown that Qigong can improve the metabolic process in different ways. One study published in the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine found that regular Qigong practice can improve insulin resistance in patients with type 2 diabetes. Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species and the body’s ability to neutralize them. Chronic inflammation can lead to the development of various metabolic disorders, including insulin resistance, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.
